What are audio trails?

Audio trails are recorded guides that you can download onto your mobile phone, MP3 player, iPod or PDA to accompany you on your walk. You can listen to them at home, but you'll find standing next to the feature will really help bring the clips to life. We currently have audio trails for two of our country parks and one for a local woodland managed by Caerphilly Woodlands Trust.

Parc Cwm Darran

Our first trail follows how Parc Cwm Darran has been transformed from a ‘toxic planet’ to a wildlife haven in less than thirty years. Okay, so the toxic planet was for BBC’s Doctor Who, but it provided the perfect Martian landscape for the series in the late 1970’s. Listen to this audio trail to find out what happened here to make it a suitable alien backdrop. The clips are arranged in a linear order for you to follow as a trail with a downloadable map.

Parc Penallta

At Parc Penallta the commentary outlines the stories behind some of the sculptures from the High Point Observatory to The Crannog lake. This audio trail is not a guided trail as such but encourages you to explore and find the sculptures yourself. Download the park leaflet that marks the approximate positions of some of the sculptures.

Wern Ddu Clay Pits

Our third trail will let you find out more about the fascinating geological history of the former Wern Ddu Clay Pits near Caerphilly. The Clay Pits, also known as Coed-Y-Werin, is a Geological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) because of the exceptional and internationally important Coal Measure rocks exposed there that made South Wales famous. As you explore, please treat the woods, wildlife and rocks with respect.

You won’t need to wander far from the obvious paths and numbered wooden posts mark all the audio points.
