Have you visited your local park?

You might be wondering what the difference between our urban parks and our country parks is. After all, they're both often just large open spaces with lots of grass and trees. Here in Caerphilly county borough our urban parks have been providing an oasis of peace and tranquillity within the developing urban areas throughout the last century. They vary in size from the larger parks like Waunfawr and Bargoed down to the swings at the end of your road, but they all offer a chance of fresh air and exercise. We have 34 parks spread throughout the county borough, but we've picked out six of them to feature. Our other parks are listed here.

The "Nelson" Sculpture at Nelson Wern Park

In the past urban parks were often much more formal in their management and appearance but as times have changed so have our parks. Long gone is the "keep off the grass" approach and with these changes has come about greater community involvement and sense of ownership. Our urban parks are continually developing, offering new facilities and are a fantastic asset on your doorstep.

Our urban parks are still likely to include all the facilities you would associate with a traditional park such as children’s play areassports pitches, bowling greens and tennis courts. We've still got a bandstand! These days, though, you'll also find multi-use games areas (MUGAs), outdoor gyms, youth shelters and skate ramps. There are wildlife areas and mazes cut into wildflower meadows. If your interests are less energetic the parks are the perfect place for a relaxing stroll, a picnic with the family or better still you can just sit on a bench and admire the flowers.

Our urban parks are a vital part of our network of green spaces.
