Covid-19 (Coronavirus) - Update

Caerphilly, along with many other councils across Wales, has taken the decision in accordance with section 9 of the PUBLIC HEALTH, WALES, The Health Protection (Coronavirus Restrictions) (Wales) Regulations 2020 to close all enclosed children’s play areas, MUGAs, skate parks, municipal and country parks which it is responsible for until further notice. This also includes all cycle paths within the parks.

This tough decision will ensure social distancing, limit the spread of Coronavirus and protect our residents, especially those who are vulnerable.

Residents must not enter these spaces and the position will be constantly reviewed following advice from the UK and Welsh Government.

Anglers help to improve biodiversity at Pen-y-Fan Pond

Countryside Rangers and Islwyn Anglers have been working together at Pen-y-Fan Pond to improve the biodiversity of the pond and surrounding wetland.

Work was carried on one of the few dry and sunny days this winter to create a wooden underwater dead hedge to provide small fish, amphibians and insects a safe haven where they can live and grow in the pond away from the bigger fish and birds.

Some of the existing lakeside willow trees were coppiced to provide the wood, but the trees will quickly grow back to provide safe nesting areas for birds and also allow more light into the wetland for flowering plants to flourish and provide nectar for bees and insects, a large deadwood pile was also constructed away form the pond as a safe nesting area for birds including Reed Buntings.

Despite the cold weather the volunteers did a great job to improve the valuable wetland habitat at the pond and as always tea, coffee and biscuits at lunchtime helped to keep them motivated and finish the project.
