nelson-wern-park | Your Green Spaces

As much a country park as an urban one Nelson Wern Park combines the facilities of both in a unique and quite delightful public green space.

Originally part of a stone quarry with railway sidings, work started in 2000 to develop a new park for Nelson. Now there's something for every age as this green space becomes an established and valued part of the local community.

What to see and do

A wealth of play

For the younger children there's a well-designed and attractive children’s playground overlooked by the amphitheatre. The amphitheatre is an ideal place for mums and dads to sit, chat and still keep an eye on their offspring. Older children can burn off their energy on the BMX track and skate ramps whilst the youth shelter draws in youngsters from the local community. Finally there's a football pitch, home to Nelson Cavaliers.

Wildlife

The Wern is managed with nature in mind. The woods have been designated a Site of importance for Nature Conservation (SINC), and are teeming with wildlife. As you meander through the wildflower meadows or cross the boardwalk through the wet woods why not use our information boards to help you identify some of the orchids, dragonflies, butterflies and birds you'll spot.

Where it is Nelson Wern Park is on the eastern side of Nelson.

How to get there By car - B4255 (Caerphilly Road) at Nelson. By bus - Several services to Nelson. By bike - NCN R47 runs adjacent to the lower part of the park. Nearest railway station - Ystrad Mynach (40 minute walk)

Park hours The park is open all year round. It is also free to access the park.

Car parks The main car park is located off the B4255 (Caerphilly Road).

Other access points Access can be gained on foot or by bike off the NCN R47 between Nelson and Ystrad Mynach. Access to the park can be gained off Wern Crescent.

Toilets There are no toilets available.

Picnic tables Picnic tables are located near the playground.

Accessibility The main entrance to the car park is unrestricted but there are access control points in place at the two entrances off Wern Crescent that may prove restrictive for larger mobility scooters. There is a disabled parking bay in the main car park. The main paths are tarmac with other paths made up of stone dust, natural ground and a wooden boardwalk. There are some steep gradients to some of the paths. There are plenty of benches around the park.
